Time Minus One – A Space Odyssey Mix

Posted by Jon, onehumanbeing on December 29, 2010

Welcome to a new sound collage adventure from UFOverdriver.

This is a densely-layered space odyssey that involves new and experimental techniques in sound collage creation… headphones are recommended for optimum immersion.

Listen: Time Minus One: A Space Odyssey Mix

Part I – The Launch

Our journey begins with a three track group of collages composed of original recorded material by UFOverdriver mixed alongside a loop from the classic Sheep by Pink Floyd, which is joined in track three with a loop from Aztec Camera’s version of Jump.

Overlaid on the tracks are recordings from various Apollo missions, a speech by Sen. Barack Obama on the campaign trail, short clips from Wall Street and Star Wars Episode III – Revenge of the Sith and other stuff…

The overall direction of The Launch is to reflect on the promises that were presented to us, the voters, by Senator Barack Obama while on the campaign trail in early 2008.

Part II – The Space Odyssey

12 Minutes and 44 seconds into the collage The Space Odyssey begins…

The next 6 tracks were constructed using the audio from the film 2001: A Space Odyssey, which I downloaded from YouTube in thirteen parts of approximately ten and a half minutes each.

I took the audio from selected parts (tracks 4 through 6 used parts 12, 11 , 9, 13, and 1 – while tracks 7 through 9 used parts 10, 5, 6, 8, and 7 – see graphic below) and stacked them in layers in my mixer. Then I played around with the volume of the various layers while applying various effects to create “chance” loops of sounds.

Graphic Below: The “mix view” from Adobe Audition 3, the program I use to create my sound collages. The area displayed shows the two “stacks” of 2001: A Space Odyssey audio clips, with the volume control levels for each clip.

Included in The Space Odyssey is several extensive sound clips from philosopher Alan Watts. I offer no opinion at this point on Alan Watts ideas and concepts, I just liked the sound of his voice and the pacing of his speech. You can find out more about Alan Watts here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Watts.

Part II – The Space Odyssey is deliberately and delightfully trippy – for best results try listening to this mix with headphones on…

UFOverdriver has been busy this last week working on this densely layered sound collage of mixed-media from the first week of the Wikileaks Cable Dump – a week that will be remembered as a historical battle in the history of the InfoWars…

This new remix includes music from U2, Talking Heads and Radiohead, lectures from Alan Watts and sound clips from an audiobook version of 1984, as well as numerous other clips, cuts, samples and various bits of audio debris from this first week of skirmishes in the new InfoWars…

UFOverdriver – Rule Number Two Is The New Rule Number One – The Wikileaks Big Cable Dump Mix

Information About This Mix

First mixed on November 30, 2010 and released as a short pieces called Rule Number Two Will Be Told To You In Reverse, this remix was completed on December 6, 2010 and takes a broader look at this unfolding (or continuously leaking) situation.

While the first mix was only 3:48, this new re-mix is 14:20 and contains 6 individual tracks…

Music Pieces Used:

U2 – One Step Closer (from How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb)

Talking Heads – Life During Wartime (from Fear Of Music)

Radiohead – Videotape (from In Rainbows)

Radiohead – House of Cards (from In Rainbows)

Some of the material used in this sound collage (including the title) comes from an audio-cassette invitation to a party created by my friends Brian Maul, Kirk Jones (the voice saying “Rule number two will be told to you in reverse”) and Philip May back in the early 1990′s.

You can hear the complete invitation here (it’s about 30 minutes long and quite amazing…) http://onehumanbeing.com/central/2010/11/27/souvenirs-from-the-late-20th-century/

The drum loops came from the Acid Loops Universal Groove Elements, but I altered them somewhat… in the background are some strange loops from something I recorded in June of 1990, and there’s also some organ playing in there that I recorded last week for this collage.

“Hey Freethinker” – I took this sound clip from my friend’s audio-invitation, but it really comes from a group called Voice Farm
