This Is The Voice Of Your Conscience Mix

Posted by Jon, onehumanbeing on December 11, 2010

After being deeply inspired by Sen. Bernie Sanders’ filibuster/long speech on Friday, UFOverdriver worked quickly to make use of it in a sound collage. The goal was to capture the moment and preserve it in a form that would highlight long, uninterrupted stretches of his speech.

Sen. Bernie Sander began his speech at 10:25 AM and ended it over 8 1/2 hours later at 6:59 PM. Many of us who watched it as it happened felt we were watching a historic moment.

This sound collage is composed of 5 parts/tracks; with a short introduction, the beginning of the filibuster, a short interlude, another uninterrupted segment of the speech, and then the conclusion.

Enjoy!

UFOverdriver – This Is The Voice Of Your Conscience Mix

About This Sound Collage

Track One can be heard as a sound collage of this moment of social confusion and directionless fog, with President Obama playing the role of Suzy Creamcheese.

Both Track Two and Track Four contain long stretches from the speech. Track Two is the beginning of the speech and Track Four is from the middle of the afternoon.

Track Three provides a short interlude with a piece from an audiobook of the novella Anthem by Ayn Rand

The sound collage ends with Track Five which includes the conclusion of Sen. Sanders’ speech and some closing statements from the Department of Civil Defense.

Some Music Pieces Used

Frank Zappa and The Mothers Of Invention – The Return Of The Son Of Monster Magnet (from Freak Out!)

David Byrne and Brian Eno – America Is Waiting (from My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts)

Gary Numan – Cars (from Pleasure Principle)

David Bowie – The Man Who Sold The World (from The Man Who Sold The World)

DJ Shadow – Stem/Long Stem (from Endtroducing)

The Markeys – Last Night (from 7″ single – Last Night/The Night Before)

Moby – Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad? (from Play)

The Thievery Corporation – The Richest Man In Babylon (from The Richest Man In Babylon)

The Thievery Corporation – The State Of The Union (from The Richest Man In Babylon)

Brian Eno – Deep Blue Day (from Apollo Atmospheres)

Note

After the speech, both my wife and I were inspired to write the White House – here’s my email to the President:

Dear Mr. President:

I hope you will choose to stand with Sen. Bernie Sanders and the brave stand he took today to call out the moral hypocrisy of supporting continued tax cuts for the ultra-rich while making cuts to crucial government programs.

Please remember that most Americans, and the people who voted for you, expected that you would be the one with the brave oratory and outrage like we got from Sen. Sanders today.

If only you could be so bold, Mr. President.

Respectfully,
Jon, onehumanbeing

The Brothership Has Landed

What happens when you cut-up and re-mix Pink Floyd’s classic 1977 album Animals with Bob Marley, Johnny Cash, Leonard Cohen, David Bowie, David Byrne and Brian Eno,  DJ John Digweed and other musical slices along with a number of sound clips from the mass media and popular culture?

You get a snap shot of current events in the form of an epic sound collage by UFOverdriver called The Brothership Has Landed… (note: the working title for this project was Weapons of Mass Communication – that got changed…)

This sound collage was constructed in 3 Acts between March 5th and March 17th, 2010 – and the completed piece contains 12 individual tracks, with a total length of nearly 44 minutes long.

Listen to the complete work – 43 Minutes and 38 Second…
